150 Years of History
Like ivy creeping up the castle walls, there has been rising with the
years an interest in California’s colorful beginning days.
Adventure, primitive trail blazing, uncharted seas, Indians,
Caballeros, Spanish guitars, rivers of gold, mining camps, pack trains,
stage coaches, desperados, and Chinese grab the attention of almost
every historian living in the State.
The newly discovered paradise of sunshine, fruit and flowers presented
a teeming promise. Many of the Forty-Niners coming across the plains
were absolutely amazed at the bounty of the fruit growing in the
Sacramento Valley as compared with most of the country they had just
come through.
The unique era known as the “Gold Rush Days” has been carefully
prospected by historians, but most of the story told is about
everything but the activity of the church. There still remains some
flashes of color, as the minors say, which cannot be passed over. In
question is the modest yet powerful influence of the church. The
uninterrupted course of existence of all the churches throughout those
glamorous times is suffused by the romantic glow of the gold rush
itself.
[from the forward]
St. John’s story is a colorfully woven history of the power, gentleness
and magnitude of this central church over the last 150 years and the
city that developed along side it.
Beautifully written and delivered by Henry Delamere , Marysville’s City Historian.

Life
does not end just because you die. This is the first of many lessons
Sherrie is faced with when her life is tragically cut short at the age
of fourteen. Overcome with a sense of loss and desperation, Sherrie is
suddenly thrust into the unknown and a Heaven she never could have
imagined. It is a Heaven where there is no one answer to anything; a
Heaven where lives are played out like movies and flowers grow tall in
each individual’s garden. There, with the help of her spirit guide,
Sera, she must review her own life in order to move on to the next
level. In order to do this, she must learn to let go of the things—and
people—she cares for, come to terms with her unhappy past, accept that
which she cannot change, and forgive the mother who never loved her.

Smartsville and Timbuctoo (California State Landmarks Nos. 321 and 320)
are essentially one place with two names. As worked-out claims and
floods forced placer forty-niners up from the sandbars into the hills
above the Yuba River, and as word spread around the world about gold in
the California hills, towns and communities formed.
