Mandy has the perfect life and is the perfect
student; now she wants to have the perfect body and be beautiful, thin
and graceful like the models and movie stars she sees in magazines and
on television.
One day, when her
friends tell her she looks fat in a new dress, she decides to diet just
like everyone else. What Mandy doesn't know is her extreme dieting
lands her into all sorts of trouble.
Age level: 10 - 12 year olds, but parents and grandparents will also enjoy this book!
Thin Club is the fictional story of an eleven-year-old girl who develops anorexia nervosa. It is very well written and well suited for that age group. The author documents the classic path toward self-destruction that a pre-teen child can travel, influenced by insecurity, emotional distress, peer pressure, and the public media. It is a wonderful primer for parents and children involved in this devastating illness.
The progress of Mandy’s illness is followed from onset to recovery. Her
recovery begins in an interesting twist with a “visit” from her
deceased grandmother whom she adored. With support from her parents and
friends, Mandy slowly but steadily recovers, and the story ends on a
positive note.
The artwork is beautifully done and portrays Mandy’s ride on an emotional roller coaster.
There is a bonus in the form of two pages of information on this
illness and websites with additional information. Kim Tennant is to be
commended for creating a short, easy to read, well organized book that
pre-teens and parents should find informative and interesting to read.
Review written by Bill Crocker,
the Administrator of Amicus Books Literary Lounge Project , and author of the hysterically funny novel, Wacky Track to Independence.
