Fighting the family genetics that shortened the life of his ancestors, John Crandall has been diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes, thyroiditis and arthritis. Though he has survived them all, they are his constant companions. Since he has learned to write, using the Amhearst Writers and Artists (AWA) Writing as Healing method, he is better able to cope with illnesses. This method allows people share their life experiences through writing in a safe, supportive environment.
John has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Master of Science in Counseling Psychology. His experience as a counselor and director of a domestic violence treatment program led him to recognize the importance of writing as a way of healing, which, in turn, inspired him to work under Lawrence Span and to study under Pat Schneider, founder of AWA.
As a new member at the Literary Lounge, John has taken advantage of the programs for authors. With the Lounge support, he is finishing a non-fiction book about anger management and accountability. A collection of his early works, Poet Healed, was published in 2005 and a number of his articles and essays have appeared in Mainline Magazine and Enjoy the Ride. He also has a regular column in the California Blacksmith Association magazine.
Not limiting himself to writing, John expresses his creativity as a metalsmith working with iron, bronze, aluminum, glass and ceramics. John lives in Sacramento with his wife of thirty-four years, Denise, and is watched over by their dogs, Molly and Trixy, and their cat, Herman.
