The Best Books to Donate

The Books we cannot take

How to pack books for safe delivery and storage

Best Books to Donate:

At Amicus Books nearly 90% of the books we sell are Non-Fiction, that is, books that give information such as Biographies, Gardening, History, Health etc. Therefore, the best books to donate are non-fiction.

Our #1 selling genres (areas of interest ) are spiritual books such as Metaphysical and New Thought, followed closely by Local History, Biography, Physics, Writing, Gardening and Self Help.

We are always grateful for:

  • Local History
  • Music Books, Sheet Music and Musical Instruction.
  • Books on CD
  • Books on Tape
  • Art instruction
  • Crafts- Knitting, sewing, candle making, woodworking, metal working etc.
  • Architecture
  • Classical Fiction - Aldous Huxley, Mark Twain, Willa Cather, Jack London, Sylvia Plath etc.
  • 50's and 60's Beat style – Richard Brautigan, Susan Sontag, Alan Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, etc.
  • Books of Joy -- a project designed to meet the needs of one local school district by providing the books they need to build a school library and to supplement class room curriculum. Click here for a list of specific books they have requested.

How to pack books for safe delivery and storage:

Due to limited space for book delivery and storage we ask that donations are packed in regular paperbag.jpg or recylable grocery bags (preferably with handles). This allows for the books to be easily moved, protects them from damage and allows them to be stored compactly until they are processed.

Unfortunately, many books are damaged during transportation. This of course lowers the value of the book, sometimes rendering the book unsalable. This can be easily avoided. Our experience has proven that the common paper bag is the best way to move books. Use the example below to quickly and easily pack the books.

***** If you need bags for delivery, you can pick them up at Amicus. We recycle the bags over and over so we always have some on hand. *****

HEALTHY BOOKS ARE HAPPY BOOKS!!!

Be sure to leave room at the top of the bag so books don't get bent when you lift the handles of the bag.

Small paperback books can be stacked side by side on the top.

Oversized books can be slipped in one edge along the side like the Where's Waldo book in the example.

Stack paperbacks according to size, with smallest sized at the top.

Place Hard Covers on the bottom to strengthen the bag and prevent Paperbacks from bending.
